Island orientation
Ukulhas Island: where things are
Ukulhas is a small, walkable island in Alif Alif Atoll. This page gives you an orientation to the key zones — harbour, village, beaches, reef — before you arrive. No interactive map is available yet; this is a written guide.
Ukulhas Island is one of the larger inhabited local islands in Alif Alif Atoll, Maldives, at approximately 2 kilometres in length and small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. The island runs roughly north to south. Speedboats arrive at the harbour jetty on the western side. The dedicated bikini beach for tourists is on the eastern (reef-facing) side, where the house reef is also accessible from shore. The main village and accommodation area occupies the interior and western half of the island.

Key zones
The main areas of Ukulhas Island
Understanding where things are on Ukulhas takes less than five minutes. The island is compact and easy to navigate on foot.
Harbour and arrival jetty
All speedboat and ferry arrivals come into the main harbour jetty on the western side of the island. This is where your transfer drops you off. Most guesthouses are within easy walking distance of the harbour, and your accommodation will usually advise on how to reach your room from the jetty.
The harbour area also has the island's main administrative and community facilities. The jetty is a working harbour, not a tourist facility, so be prepared for a straightforward functional arrival rather than a resort-style welcome.
Village and accommodation area
Ukulhas has a permanent resident community. The village occupies the central and western interior of the island, where you will find guesthouses and small hotels, local cafes and restaurants, the mosque, and everyday community life. This is a working Maldivian community; conservative dress codes apply throughout the village.
Swimwear and revealing clothing should only be worn in the designated tourist beach area. Outside the bikini beach zone, cover up modestly out of respect for local residents. See our dress code guide for details.
Bikini beach (tourist beach)
The designated tourist beach — commonly called "bikini beach" — is on the eastern side of the island, facing the reef. Swimwear is permitted only in this designated zone. The beach is sandy and generally calm, with good access to the house reef for snorkelling directly from the shoreline.
Ukulhas has one of the most accessible house reefs of any local island in the Maldives. You can enter the water from the beach and snorkel the reef without needing a boat. Sea turtles, reef sharks, and colourful fish are commonly encountered. See our bikini beach guide for more.
House reef and ocean side
The reef runs along the eastern side of the island, accessible from the bikini beach. This is the primary attraction for snorkellers visiting Ukulhas. Beyond the reef, the open Alif Alif Atoll extends north and south — the same waters where guided diving, manta ray trips, dolphin watching, and sandbank excursions take place.
Ukulhas's eco island status means the reef is protected. Do not touch or stand on coral, do not collect anything from the reef, and use only reef-safe sunscreen. See our activities guide for guided excursion options.
Restaurants and cafes
Restaurants and local cafes are scattered through the village, primarily along the main roads and near the guesthouse area. Ukulhas has a small but functional dining scene for a local island. Most restaurants offer simple Maldivian and international dishes. Alcohol is not available on Ukulhas, as it is a local island with a Muslim community.
See our restaurant guide for a listing of dining options on the island.
Getting around Ukulhas
Ukulhas Island is small enough to walk everywhere. There are no taxis, no traffic, and no need for hired transport within the island. The walk from the harbour to the bikini beach takes about 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Most guesthouses are central and within easy reach of both the beach and the harbour.
Bicycles are available from some guesthouses. For those with mobility requirements, ask your accommodation about the terrain and access before you book, as paths are unpaved in parts of the island.
The island has no car hire, no ride-hailing, and no formal public transport. The small size of the island is part of the experience.
Interactive map not yet available
An interactive map of Ukulhas Island is planned for a future version of this guide. For now, the written orientation above covers all the key zones. For satellite imagery or street-level views, search for "Ukulhas Island Maldives" in Google Maps or Apple Maps — the island is well-indexed and the overhead satellite view clearly shows the beach, reef, and harbour positions.
